Is it just me or do other people notice that we may have lost some of our focus in regards to the games.

Example circa 8th century bc in greece when the games were just getting started, people would gather from all around to watch; and winners were bestowed with pride and respect by their community. now athletes are valued for their marketability and are left to fund raise on their for their own behalf. As if we didn't care to have athletes represent us. What is left in the games now except a chance to show the world how state of the art ones facility is, or how much tax payer you can throw away in an attempt to draw a crowd.
Its just seems to me that one by one everything that had some sort of value to it is slowly being stripped of any deeper meaning. i fear a society where everything must be taken literally

That article was really interesting. I never noticed that the sand doesn't stick to the players, but I guess if it did it would interrupt the players and it would be used as an excuse as to why they did not perform well. But I do agree that the Olympics are no longer about the games and are focused on mostly the financial aspect. The main goal now is to draw in a large crowd so they are able to turn a larger profit. I heard on the radio that in America they tape the Olympics so they are never played live, and when it is replayed at prime time they charge incredible amounts of money for commercials because they can since it's "prime time".

I dunno if i agree. i mean in what way are these games really any different. the athletes compete for pretty much the same things, and the awards have only gotten better with time. I think your being a little to dramatic x

d0rf how can you say that. when the Olympics first started it was dedicated to the pursuit of honor via sports competitions. Now like bctf commented, its all about marketability, im sure Paraguay could have found someone who didnt look like a model to rep them in the Olympics but im sure franco but asses on couches all through their country at least.

It seems that michael phelps is at risk of losing his medals because some ad photos that were leaked on the internet.

I think its kind of foolish to do this. i mean it only supports my theory that the games are less about the athletics than they are about money.
