So today i had a debate with my room mate and we agreed to disagree.
He said that Buddhism is a a religion by definition
-it requires strict detication
- Has its own code of ethics
- teachings and parables
-meditation and yoga rituals

But i feel in the conventional sense of religion buddhism doesnt qualify. In my opinion it is more of a application of philosophy into a way of life. I see it as more similar to the preachings of Diogense the cynic of athens or Epicurus.
buddhism is more about attaining a state of being, it allows one to follow the teachings of any religion, while providing s secondary support for fortifying ones self. it doesnt ask us to give up our life or beg for forgiveness for sin we are born with. it simply asks us to look in ourselves beyond what we have and see who we are.

I will leave this under arts and intellect and file it under an appropriate category once we reach a consensus

budda didint even take into acount computers, or binary...how could he, unless he was an alien, trancending time and space, like philosophie. all matter are more complicated that they apear. open third eye to real true nature of universe and channel higher conciousness.

i think to be alive means to live, and to classify what a religion is is difficult i agree. and there is a theory the posits that the main religions that exist on earth are merely creation stories crafted by aliens. i wont comment on the validity but i will say it is interesting.

long explanation

simple explanation

I have to agree with your roomate.

-it requires strict detication
- Has its own code of ethics
- teachings and parables
-meditation and yoga rituals

those are the qualities that RELIGIONS have that PHILOSOPHIES don't have.

Those qualities seperate budhism from other religions.

But that is not to say that it isn't a philosophy as well. In many senses, all religions are "philosophies" because they "philosophize" about existence.

So my answer is this:

It is a religion. All religions contain philosophy, but not all philosophies contain religion.
