The New Penology?
Conservative politics have resulted in the re-emergence of violent forms of punishment, the rehabilitative ideal that had begun to emerge is now reversed.
1. More prisons and less social programs
2. Portray the poor and drug addicted as criminals not victims of larger societal problems
3. The prison system results in the stigmatization of those imprisoned
4. The switch from treatment to punishment
5. Increased instances of mental illness in the prison system
Is the new penology a step forward or step backwards. The United States currently has the highest prison rate in the world over 650 per 100000 (in perspective 50% of the worlds countries have prison rates lower that 150/100000).
Put more money towards our social safety net not our prisons.

I think this is a step backwards, it reminds me of a post enlightenment era of criminal justice.

The new penology is a way for governments to profit of those weaker classes in society. with the growing gap between the rich and poor society begins to fall into a state on anomie; people dissatisfied with their current standing in life begin to turn to illegal or illegitimate means in an attempt provide the themselves with the life they feel they should be living. Durkheim coined this term in the 1600's or something, and its sad to say that this applies to the current state of society. This state of anomie has slowly been building and now we are starting to see the impact on our own lives. This new penology is an attempt by our governments to cash in on the problems that they have caused. This isn't just in north america, great Britain and and the UK are exhibiting similar trends.

The law “improves” public grounds by forcing people - protestors - elsewhere. It amends an older law that made it a federal crime to “willfully and knowingly” enter a restricted space. Now you will be found guilty of this offense if you simply “knowingly” enter a restricted area, even if you did not know it was illegal to do so. The Department of Homeland Security can designate an event as one of “national significance,” making protests or demonstrations near the event illegal.

The law makes it punishable by up to ten years in jail to protest anywhere the Secret Service “is or will be temporarily visiting,” or anywhere they might be guarding someone. Does the name Secret tell you anything about your chances of knowing where they are? The law allows for conviction if you are “disorderly or disruptive,” or if you “impede or disrupt the orderly conduct of Government business or official functions.” You can no longer heckle or “boo” at a political candidate’s speech, as that would be disruptive.

How can any sane person justify making a peaceful protest illegal in a democratic nation. The united states was build on forms of social disobedience. Ever hear of the Boston tea party, and not the new conservative movement plaguing america, the protest that took place in 1773. Imagine if this was done today, people would face criminal charges of destruction of property trespassing, etc. when they did it they were patrons of change.
